Video Games

Generating over 78 billion dollars annually, with over 2.5 billion gamers worldwide, video games have become a global phenomenon. Used constructively, video games have been shown to help some children develop better social and problem solving skills, and to help them to connect with the rest of their social group. (needs citation) However, when used excessively, video game addiction can cripple a child’s potential, or expose them to situations that they might not be aptly prepared for. There are a wide variety of genres, playable on most every device. From puzzle games to first person shooters, there are countless different ways to play. Just like movie ratings, the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (or ESRB) video game ratings are not legally mandated, but are industry-enforced. There are no laws on the books to prevent children from buying violent video games that may contain content inappropriate for their age and maturity level. The introduction of voice chat features in various games has allowed players talk to each other and communicate more effectively, but has also increased the risk of exposing children to cyberbullying and online predators.  It is therefore important to be aware of the types of media your children are consuming.
